Shree Chitragupta Ji ki Katha

Shree Chitragupt Ji ki Katha

The story of Chitragupt Ji's origin is found in the Padma Purana. After creating the universe, Brahma, the creator god, also created the four Vedas, the 14 Manus, and the 16 sons. He tasked these creations with managing the universe. Despite his efforts, Brahma noticed that there was no one to keep an account of the good and bad deeds of all living beings, which was essential for the fair judgment of souls after death.

Brahma then sat in deep meditation for 11,000 years to find a solution. When he opened his eyes, he saw a divine being standing before him, holding a pen and an inkpot. This being was none other than Chitragupt Ji, who was born from Brahma's mind and soul. Brahma declared him the divine accountant of the universe, responsible for keeping a meticulous record of every living being's actions, both virtuous and sinful.

The Role of Chitragupt Ji

Chitragupt Ji's primary role is to assist Yama, the god of death. It is believed that after a person dies, their soul appears before Yama's court. Chitragupt Ji then presents his complete record of the person's life—every thought, word, and deed—for Yama to use in making a just decision about their afterlife. Based on this record, the soul is either sent to heaven (Swarg) for its good deeds or to hell (Narak) for its sins.

His name itself holds meaning: 'Chitra' refers to the picture or record of a person's life, and 'Gupt' means hidden or secret. Thus, he is the one who keeps a hidden or secret account of all the deeds of living beings. The story of his origin highlights the importance of keeping a righteous account of one's life, as no deed, good or bad, goes unnoticed in the grand cosmic scheme.
